Description
Empty a vial of purple crystals into a bottle cap and then pour a syrupy liquid from a second vial onto the pile. After a few seconds, the liquid will start to sizzle and smoke, and then spontaneously ignite! It is highly recommended that this experiment be done outside. Potassium permanganate is a very strong oxidizer and easily ignites the glycerin after a brief induction period.
Kit Contents:
Small vials containing glycerin and potassium permanganate
Bottle Cap
Shipping: Not regulated for transport.
Hazard Summary: Use caution when handling potassium permanganate. It will readily stain hands and organic worksurfaces (such as wood). It can cause organic materials, especially materials that are flammable or combustible, to ignite. It is also very persistent when trying to clean up.
Disposal: Check with local regulations for proper disposal of manganese compounds. In some jurisdictions, potassium permanganate is used in the water treatment process and is therefore not a contaminant. Other areas, however, classify manganese as a pollutant. Do NOT simply throw the product away! Doing so may cause a fire!
