Benedict’s Solution, Qualitative
qualitative test for reducing sugars
contains sodium citrate, sodium carbonate, and copper(II) sulfate
Instructions for Use: Add 1-2 mL of this reagent to approximately 5 mL of a liquid sample suspected of containing a reducing sugar in a test tube (15-18 mm wide and 125-150 mm long). Place the test tube into a hot water bath at about 90 ºC for no more than 5 minutes. The development of a red color (metallic copper) indicates the presence of a reducing sugar.
